Flower stem erect from basal rosette of leaves. Milky sap. Leaves 2–12 in. long, linear tapering to pointed tip, entire or with narrow lobes, soft hairs. Flower head single, erect, phyllaries lance-shaped, inside long, outer shorter. Flowers 5 to many, yellow, often reddish on underside, opening in morning and fading in afternoon. Grows in loose soils in meadows, woods, steppe or deserts, at low and mid elevations.
