Erect sturdy stems. Plant hairless, bright green. Leaves on stem compound with 3 oval 1/2 in. long leaflets up to 6 times longer than wide. Flowers large, bright yellow, held in spike above leaves. Grows in meadows, shrubby places near streams in forests. Similar to lupines but leaves are like clovers with only 3 parts. Inedible by browsing animals.
