Decumbent to ascending. Stems usually tinged red. Leaves lance-shaped, coated with woolly hairs. Basal leaves 1–5 in. long; few stem leaves shorter, clasping. Flower heads usually single or to 4, cup bracts in 2 rows, leaf-like, coated with fine to woolly hairs. Ray flowers yellow, 25–50, disk flowers 60. Grows in alkaline meadows, marshes, mudflats, near springs, at high elevations.
