Stem erect, with reddish tint at base. Leaves 2–8 in. long on stem, oval, often toothed, may be lobed at base. Flowers in dense spike; petals 4, more than 1 in. long; buds green or yellowish, opening to yellow flower that turns dull orange with age. Grows in disturbed areas at low elevations. A worldwide weed originating in eastern North America.
