Erect perennial, rarely woody at base, green, without hairs. Stems red to brown, hollow. Leaves only on stem with short petioles at well-spaced intervals, oval, divided palmately, 5–9 leaflets each 1–2 in. long. Flower heads 6–20 in. long on 1–6 in. stalks. Flowers held loosely on stem, violet or blue, often 2 shades of color. Grows in sand or gravel near marshes, streams, and other wet places, at low elevations.
