Stem erect, variable in leaf and flower. Leaves long, narrow, hairless to densely covered with hairs. Flower buds erect. Flowers small, widely spaced, pink, lavender, purple, or wine red, sometimes with darker spot on upper part of petal; petals fan-shaped, with a slight uneven upper edge. Grows in grassy or shrubby places at low elevations. Often hybridizes in southern part of range with subsp. purpurea, with long, widely lance-shaped leaves, flowers in dense head.
