Stems erect, numerous from woody base, rough with small hairs. Leaves 1/2–2 in. long, triangular, toothed, alternate, with pointed tips. Inflorescence consists of many clusters of 8–12 flower heads at stem top. Flowers pink, white, blue, or purple, 8–12 in. Grows in streambanks among rocks at mid to high elevations.
